Sister restaurant to Tiki's. Basically the same type of food but maybe slightly more of a casual flair. Holokai Grill has a great touristy Waikiki atmosphere. A fun place to have a meal. The service on the other hand is not the greatest. Seems to be staffed by rookies to the food service industry. Food gets piled up at the hot lights because the waiters and busers don't know how to organize themselves. The food is pretty tasty though. Nothing special, but satisfying in an unhealthy way. Favorites include kalua pig nachos (made with fried won ton pi instead of tortilla), kalua pig sandwich, steak sandwich, cheese fries, guava baby back ribs, fresh fish, etc.

Tom's Tip: Try the Honey Wheat beer. It's made specially for them and it's a great tasting beer.

who ate there on Sunday, November 18, 2007
The atmosphere and the presentation of the dishes were my favorite part of my dining experience at Nobu. Unfortunately the food didn't strike me as much as its reputation.
I tried pretty much everything on their menu. I must say their sushi fish were very fresh, and their uni tempura was so creamy and unique.. it was delicious. Other side dishes were not so impressive. Sauces were dull and not so flavorful. The restaurant has the feel of a fancy bar and a line of sushi men under spot lights reminded me of bar tenders in style. very fancy..
I would probably go back to enjoy sake and its atmosphere, but not to seek for unique taste of Japanese fusion food..

who ate the Hy's Garlic Steak on Monday, December 10, 2007
The service was "average" at best. I liked the cheese bread (but it wasn't anything spectacular). I thought the garlic steak was good...and it was cooked the way I ordered it. I liked that the garlic was subtle enough so that it didn't leave you feeling like you needed to eat a pack of mints.

who ate the Hy's special and Banana Foster's on Monday, December 10, 2007
First, I gotta say that Hy's has by far the best steak on island.

Yet, what it has in steaks, it seriously lacks in other aspects. To begin the night, the 2 valets sat at their podium while I sat waiting in front of the restaurant. For a restaurant that only allows you to valet... talk about service. Not to mention, when it was indicated that I wasn't waiting for Christmas, they continued to stare at their laptop.

(Why they have a laptop is beyond me. Valets and laptops? And they were searching for crap in Google.)

Overall, the food was excellent. As usual. I'm not sure if it's 50 bucks excellent, but still good nonetheless. Though, the banana foster's wasn't as good as the last time I ate it. Just wasn't caramelized enough, and not worth the 13 bucks a person especially for its quality. After dinner, a waiter proceeded to spill water all over the back of my chair and shirt. I'm assuming that he didn't realize he dropped almost half a glass on me, but as a former waiter, I don't know how you miss that either, especially when it's a dead night. What can I say, great service.

So with all that said, as much as I love their food, I probably won't be going back there anytime soon.

I will venture to say that most shabu shabu places are gonna have similar menus and the food will taste very similar. That said, the food is good. The interior design is kinda neat and classy and modern looking. A few tables and a round bar to sit at. Each person has a burner and a pot to cook their food in. Beer selection is not great, but you're supposed to eat here to be healthy anyway. Service is good, but really, what type of service do you need at a place like this? This is a good restaurant, but nothing that will blow you away. I'd still recommend trying it out.
Afterward you can go next door and eat another meal at Gyukaku! :)
