Posted on Hawaiirama by Alex at 12:44 AM

This is footage of Kipu Falls, one of the most popular on Kauai and close to where the great opening scene from "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was filmed. . Alas, it's an illegal trail but lots of locals and tourists go there. In rainy conditions it can be

December 28, 2008

Posted on Hawaiirama by Alex at 7:23 AM

I did the Molokai Mule Ride almost a decade ago on assignment for a travel publication (This video gives you a great flavor for it). The ride was spectacular. The views from the trail as it zigzags down the steep cliff towards the Kalaupapa Peninsula are nothing short of

December 28, 2008

Posted on Hawaiirama by Alex at 7:10 AM

Barack Obama and his entourage were in the dark for 12 hours from early Friday evening until the following morning. Many other parts of Oahu had power outages lasting 16 hours or longer. Supposedly, a lightning strike took down one generator that forced the whole grid to shut down --

December 27, 2008

Posted on Hawaiirama by Alex at 1:57 AM

Flemings on Maui is one of those beaches locals love but tourists rarely hit -- not a lot of hotels nearby. This video does it justice as its a beach that has everything. Left section is great for kids playing (more protected). Middle is good for noodling on bodyboards.

Kauai Foodie Tragedy: Blossoming Lotus to Close, Hawaii's Veggies Are Bummed

December 27, 2008

Posted on Hawaiirama by Alex at 1:49 AM

I'd only heard rave reviews of the Blossoming Lotus on Kauai. This was a Thai-themed vegetarian restaurant my foodie friends swooned for. One of them, a local cupcake magnate, actually ate ever dinner there for a week when he was on Kauai. Seriously. So now they are closing -- and

Hawaii Weather Report Part II: Obama? Who's That? Nice Beach, Eh?

December 24, 2008

Posted on Hawaiirama by Alex at 8:34 AM

This Hawaii beach is on the most populous island, Oahu, a stones toss from urban Honolulu. Located on the Windward Side of Oahu near Kailua (where Barack Obama is supposedly vacationing right now) is considered crowded by some locals here, including us on a bad day. Which is hysterical

Hawaii Gardens: Lyon Arboretum Revival

December 24, 2008

Posted on Hawaiirama by Alex at 8:17 AM

Nice article in Hana Hou magazine about the revival of Lyon Arboretum, a legendary but until recently ramshackle botanical garden on Oahu near downtown Honolulu and run by the University of Hawaii (caveat emptor -- I was married here at inspiration point seven years ago). The garden is now more

LOL. ROTFL. This is your view on a typical afternoon at lunch at Mama's Fish House on Maui. The lunch will set you back a bit. But what's the view worth to you at this point? I thought so. The wine list is excellent, drinks stiff and large, the

Had to start happening. Big Island super resort, Hualalai, is apparently feeling the pinch of the economic slowdown, according to this article. Oh, but it's only impacting lower end properties -- like $1.7 million condos. Sniff, sniff.
